As many of you know I’m Cuban American. Even though I was born in America, I was born in Hialeah where the population is 99.8% Cubans. And like any culture, Cubans have a lot of sayings that when literally translated into English make no sense at all, but do not dismay. I will give you the literal translation, only for the fun value, and I will explain the meaning, too.

*Lit: means literal

*Trans: translation

“Me importa tres pepinos”

Lit: I care three cucumbers

Trans: I don’t care at all

“Le pusiste la tapa al pomo”

Lit: You put the lid on the jar

Trans: You really messed up this time!

“Que pinta yo?”

Lit: What do I paint?

Trans: How does that concern me?

“Es un arroz con mango”

Lit: It’s rice with mango

Dez & Os {Pregnant}

I was super excited when Dez and Os asked me to capture this time of their lives. Dez is one my children at risk professors at Fuller Theology Seminary and I have known her since I first got to Pasadena. Her and Os, her husband, has been incredibly welcoming and is one of the reason why I feel so comfortable so away from home. Nikolas was born a couple of weeks ago but I was happy we were able to capture these before hand. I hope to get an email or phone call soon from one of them soon! I would love to photography the little guy.

Take Me Back to Cuba.

Next month marks 3 years since I visited Cuba. Not a couple of days go by that I don’t think of it, and more particularly, about the Cuban people I met there. I was there for about a week and it completely changed my life. I didn’t go there as a missionary but as a journalist desiring and expecting to experience my roots. I heard stories consistently growing up about what Cuba was like from my family. My parents or grandparents weren’t too pleased on me going because of the political conflict, but I’m so thankful I did. I was able to experience Cuba for myself. The Raw, unedited Cuba. I eventually have to write a story for myself about everything that happened to my travel partner, Sarah Kiewel and myself during that week in Cuba, but for now, here are some photographs.

Dzabe {Baby!}

I had the opportunity to photograph one the cutest 2-month baby boys ever. His name, as you see above is Dzabe! Odoi & Melissa Odotei are the proud parents. I met Odoi and Melissa at Fuller Theological Seminary, and Odoi and I will be working this year as the Co-Presidents for the School of Intercultural Studies! Although Dazbe feel asleep a couple of times while photographing him, I still managed to get some photographs of Odoi and Melissa interacting with him. I hope you guys enjoy!

Christen and Tony were one of the first people I met when I moved to SoCal about 8 months ago. I actually moved into the building where they have the awesome title of “Community Coordinators”. I felt welcomed by them right off the bat. And Christen and I connected on numerous levels since the start. They are actually leaving for the Summer (But hopefully returning in the Fall on an international mission trip. Cornerstone just won’t be the same without them.
